Musings on Georgian politics, the Caucasus, and all things Khachapuri

Kokoity explains, women should not be president.

by Inge Snip

There are several ways how one could eliminate an undesired presidential candidate, and one of them – South Ossetia’s current president Eduard Kokoity must have thought – is to blame it on gender. Yes ladies and gentlemen, you read it correctly: gender.

At the moment there are two presidential candidates in South Ossetia’s presidential run, female candidate Alla Jioyeva and male candidate Anatoly Bibilov, who both accumulated roughly the same amount of votes calling for a stand off.

Kokoity, who is not eligible anymore to run, must have had is favorite and is now finding – definitely dubious – ways to make sure his man wins the next round.

With thanks to civil.ge Evolutsia was attended upon Kokoity’s statements re female presidency. In an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda radio Kokoity states that it is ‘ruled out’ that a woman should become South Ossetia’s next president:

“Женщина – президент? Это исключено. Кавказ есть Кавказ…”

Which roughly translates to: ‘Women as president? It’s ruled out. The Caucasus is the Caucasus’.
